Combermere Abbey Estate

Combermere Abbey is a medieval and Gothic country home steeped in a thousand years of history on the Cheshire/Shropshire border, set in 1050 acres of woodland, farmland and lakes.

Following a major restoration project by the current owner, the run-down estate was saved from ruin and transformed into an idyllic country retreat and luxury wedding venue. With a range of accommodation on offer, Combermere Abbey allows guests to completely relax in the peace of the countryside with the estate available for exploring – including the famous Walled Gardens with the world’s only Fruit Tree Maze.

Accommodation
Combermere Abbey offers two different accommodation options – the luxury North Wing B&B and 10 unique self-catering cottages.

North Wing
The North Wing of the Abbey was originally built in the 19th century, however over the decades it began to deteriorate due to lack of funds for upkeep until it had to be abandoned in the 1950s. Following current owner Sarah Callander Beckett’s inheritance of the estate in 1992, the North Wing was rescued and fully refurbished to find a new life as a luxury B&B.

Guests have the choice of two sumptuous bedrooms – the Bhurtpore, an elegant wood-panelled room exuding history and charm, or the Salamanca, the epitome of luxury decorated in calming hues of pale blue and silver with an opulent marble clad bath. Both bedrooms offer stunning views across the 143 acre mere, and guests also benefit from use of the Tudor Study and the expansive ground floor. The ground floor is home to the quaint sitting room and an impressive dining room, where guests will enjoy their home cooked breakfast in the morning.

The Courtyard Cottages
Converted from the 19th century former stables, each of Combermere’s award winning cottages is uniquely themed to reflect a part of the estate’s history. From four poster beds, to mullion windows and pointed turrets, the cottages are steeped in history whilst providing the utmost comfort. Sleeping from 4 to 10 guests, visitors will experience the tranquillity of the estate to its fullest with woodland walks right on the doorstep. All cottages are also dog friendly.

Weddings
A multi-award winning wedding venue for all seasons, Combermere Abbey offers an exclusive and utterly romantic experience – from picturesque gardens to idyllic architecture, everything is in one wonderful place. With the Combermere cottages available to hire to accommodate up to 49 wedding guests, the bridal party can start their celebrations the night before the big day. Transported through the rolling countryside in a vintage 1927 Crossley car, the bride walks through the fruit maze of the private walled gardens which surround the restored Victorian Glasshouse where couples take their vows. Light-filled, serene and elegant, it accommodates up to 120 guests. The reception takes place in the Pavilion, where guests can dine and dance the night away. Designed entirely with weddings in mind, the Pavilion boasts designated areas for your bar, dining area and dance floor and is perfectly suited for both intimate and larger celebrations. When day turns to night, the newlyweds stay in their private honeymoon suite in the romantic North Wing.

The Grounds
Guests are free to explore and enjoy the thousands of acres at Combermere Abbey. Keen walkers can explore the magical woodlands surrounding the serene mere, and gardening aficionados can explore the fully restored Victorian Walled Gardens where roses bloom in summer and the world’s only Fruit Tree Maze envelops the entrance to the Edwardian Glasshouse
